The Testing Process

A brief explanation of the testing process

Nueva Child
IQ Test For Admission

Dear Parents,
We understand that the application process for admission to the Nueva School lower and middle school can be overwhelming.

That's why we want to make the early childhood assessment (for intellectual functioning) as easy and stress-free as possible. The offices, of Ginny Estupinian Ph.D. ABPP, have been successfully providing parents with the necessary assessments for the last decade.

Here are some reasons why you should choose our offices for your child's assessment:

Experience: Our offices have an established level of experience administering, scoring, and writing these types of reports. You can trust that your child will receive a high-quality testing experience.

Convenience: The assessment will take place in our conveniently located Los Gatos office. Your child will work one-on-one with Dr. Estupinian or one of her staff members in a comfortable environment. We will make sure to provide your child with the breaks they may need.

Standardization: The assessment we administer is standardized, meaning our office will follow the same instructions when conducting the evaluation for all children. This ensures that the results are fair and accurate.

It's important to note that although we administer this assessment, our office doesn't have any information regarding the Nueva School admission criteria or how they will use the report provided.

Our involvement is strictly focused on providing a high-quality testing experience and prompt feedback to the school and the parents.

We hope that you choose our offices for your child's assessment. If you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to reach out to us.

FAQ - For Private School Admissions
Cognitive Assessments Specifically for Helios School Families

1. Why does Nueva School require such a high IQ score for admission?

Nueva School is specifically designed to serve gifted learners who need an educational environment that matches their exceptional intellectual abilities. The school requires an IQ score of 130 or higher (98th percentile) because their curriculum, teaching methods, and social environment are carefully crafted for children who think and learn at an accelerated pace.

Unlike schools that serve a broader range of learners, Nueva's mission is to "inspire passion for lifelong learning, foster social and emotional acuity, and develop the imaginative mind" in students who are intellectually gifted. This focused approach allows them to provide the appropriate level of academic challenge, creative exploration, and social-emotional support that gifted children need to thrive.

Dr. Estupinian understands the unique cognitive profiles of gifted learners and has extensive experience conducting assessments that accurately capture your child's exceptional abilities. Her comprehensive evaluations help Nueva understand not just your child's intellectual capacity, but also their learning style, creative potential, and social-emotional needs.

2. How much time should I plan for my child's assessment appointment?

Plan for 1.5 to 2 hours for your child's cognitive assessment appointment. While the actual testing typically takes about 90 minutes, Dr. Estupinian allows extra time to ensure your child feels comfortable and can perform at their best.

The assessment includes natural break times when your child needs them, and Dr. Estupinian never rushes the process. Some children work more quickly, while others benefit from a slower pace - she adapts to your child's individual rhythm and attention span.

3. What to expect?

• Comfortable, child-friendly environment designed to reduce anxiety

• Natural breaks incorporated throughout the session

• One-on-one attention from Dr. Estupinian

• Engaging activities that feel more like games than tests

This unhurried approach ensures accurate results that truly reflect your child's cognitive abilities for their Helios School application.

4. What happens to my child's test results after the assessment?

Your child's cognitive assessment results follow a parent-controlled process that puts you in charge of how the information is shared:

Step 1: Results Come to You First

• You receive the complete assessment report within 5-7 business days

• Dr. Estupinian schedules a personal consultation to review the results with you

• You have time to understand your child's cognitive profile before any school receives the information

Step 2: School Transmission with Your Approval

• Results are never released to Helios School without your explicit instructions and approval

• Dr. Estupinian will electronically transmit the report directly to Helios School's admission office only when you give permission

• You maintain complete control over the timing and sharing of your child's information

Bonus: Free Additional Reports
If you're applying to multiple schools, there are no additional charges for sending copies of the report to two other schools. This makes it easy to include the assessment in multiple applications without extra costs.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does the evaluation cost?

The assessment cost $825 and includes up to a 2 hour testing appointment. Our office will send the report directly to Harker School after you provide permission.

How long will the assessment take?

Most children take between 90 minutes and 2 hours to complete the evaluation. We offer a 2-hour appointment time so we can take breaks as needed.

How do I prepare my child for the assessment?

There is nothing you can do, or should do, to "coach" or prepare your child for the assessment. The purpose of the examination is to assess each child's abilities without preparation. We encourage you not to put any pressure on your child about his or her test performance prior to the appointment. Your child should not prepare or study for the evaluation. Please be aware that prior exposure to test materials, preparation exercises and questions will invalidate the results.

What if my child is sick on the day of the evaluation?

If your child is sick on the day of the appointment or has been sick 5 days prior to the appointment, please call our office to reschedule. We will do everything possible to find another opening for your child, as soon as our schedule permits.

Where can I wait during the testing session?

We prefer to have only one parent can come with the child. We will meet together with your child at the beginning of the appointment to make sure your child feels comfortable working with me. During the testing process you will be able to wait in our lobby. We encourage a quite environment so that your child can do their best. If you would like to make a telephone call during this time, we request you step outside of the office to make calls.

What do I say to my child about the appointment?

You may tell your child that they will be doing some fun and interesting activities during the appointment, and you can encourage them by telling them, "just do your best". Avoid telling your child that it is a play date as this may affect their performance on the assessment. Our office staff will work with your child to keep them engaged and provide breaks as needed.

What payment methods does your office accept?

All major credit cards.

Where can I call if I have more questions?
